A shuttle van packed with passengers was involved in a New York City car crash in front of the Radio City Music Hall. According to a report in NBC New York, the injury crash occurred when a speeding Mercedes Benz hit the shuttle. The driver of the Mercedes was driving northbound on Sixth Avenue when it collided with the shuttle that was traveling eastbound on West 50th Street near Radio City and Rockefeller Plaza. Witnesses told officials that street racing might have been involved. The shuttle’s driver and four passengers were taken to area hospitals with injuries including a fractured skull and neck and back injuries.
Speed Violations
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2009 study on speeding, in fatal crashes about 55 percent of all speed-related accidents were due to a driver exceeding the speed limit. In speed-related crashes that resulted in one or more injuries, about 74 percent were due to one of the drivers operating the vehicle too fast for the conditions. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1180 (a) states: A” person shall not drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.”
Compensation for Injured Victims
Individuals who violate the speed limit or break speed laws, in addition to facing citations or criminal charges, can be held civilly liable for the injuries and damages caused. Injured accident victims can seek compensation from the at-fault party for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, loss of wages and benefits, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
