escalator A 7-year-old Trenton boy suffered injuries after his foot got stuck in a mall escalator. According to a news report in My Fox Philly, the escalator accident took place in a crowded local mall in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, when the child’s foot became lodged at the bottom of the escalator. It took rescue crews 20 minutes to free the child. The escalator was shut down after the incident.
Police say the mother of the little boy screamed alerting another shopper to hit the emergency button on the down escalator. Witnesses said the boy appeared to be in shock when emergency medical personnel rescued him. The extent of the boy’s injuries is still not known. The report states that the victim’s foot did not have to be amputated. A mall spokesperson said that the escalators had been recently inspected and cleared.

Escalator Accident Causes and Injuries
According to a Consumer Watch report, children under 5 are the most likely victims of “caught in” escalator accidents, which account for 20 percent of all escalator accident injuries. Also, falls are the most common types of accidents that occur on escalators, leading to about 75 percent of all escalator related injuries. These kinds of accidents tend to happen when clothing or shoes get caught in escalator teeth or in between steps. Slip-and-fall and trip-and-fall accidents on escalators could also result in serious injuries.
The most common cause of escalator accidents is mechanical malfunctions and/or defects. This may include missing teeth on the track, loose screws, broken or damaged steps, etc. Any entity, public or private, has a legal obligation to routinely maintain and service escalators to ensure that they are safe for riders. Injured victims can seek compensation to cover damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
