What is a Herniated or Slipped Disc?
Many times people are injured in accidents but they are unsure of what exactly is wrong with them. If you were left with sharp pain in your back or radiating pain throughout your body, you may have a slipped or herniated disc.
Spinal discs are round, jelly-filled cushions that separate your vertebrae. They are your shock absorbers, protecting and cushioning your spine as you move, bend, jump and run through your everyday life. They also help with the normal motion of the spine. If the disc is injured as the result of a slip, trip, fall or other accident, the jelly may leak out of the disc and create a weak spot, which can affect the nerve roots that run through your spinal column. When a herniated disc affects the nerve root, it can cause pain to radiate throughout your body.
Herniated discs are rarely diagnosed in the emergency room after an accident because they are not seen on x-rays. You must have a CT scan or MRI if you think you have an injured disc.
