Slip and fall accidentA woman is suing Wal-Mart saying the company is responsible for her injuries after she fell while shopping at the store. According to Ultimate Katy, the woman filed the slip-and-fall lawsuit in Harris County District Court alleging that the company was negligent in creating a safe environment for its customers. The woman says she fell at the Wal-Mart store because employees did not clean up liquid that had been spilled on the floor. She is suing for damages and related court costs.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 million people are injured in slip-and-fall accidents every year. Also, about 17,000 people die as a result of slip-and-fall-related injuries and other victims often end up suffering serious injuries.
Supermarkets and other stores carrying food products such as Wal-Mart can be a hot spot for slip-and-fall or trip-and-fall accidents because their slick surfaces do nothing to absorb any liquid spilled on them. With food, produce and beverages lining every aisle, it is common for spills to occur from time to time. Juice, soda, or water spilled on a slick floor can present a hazard for customers if not cleaned up promptly. Such slip-and-fall accidents have the potential to result in serious injuries including broken bones, head injures, and herniated discs.
Maintaining their premises and keeping it safe for customers is the responsibility of the supermarket or any other business establishment. This includes making customers aware of any spills by placing warning signs, and cleaning up the spills quickly. Supervisors must immediately fix the situation and put up “slippery floor” signs to warn anyone who may be walking near the dangerous location. If you were involved in a slip-and-fall or a trip-and-fall accident as a result of someone else’s negligence, please remember that you have rights. Some of the damages that victims of such accidents can claim include, but is not limited to, medical expenses, loss of wages and benefits, cost of hospitalization, surgery, physical therapy, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
