Queens Bus Accident Leaves Six People Injured

buscrash A tour bus crashed into a house in Queens leaving six people injured. According to a news report in The New York Times, the collision occurred the afternoon of Aug. 24 when the bus carrying passengers from the Resorts World Casino in South Ozone Park veered off a busy roadway in the Rego Park neighborhood. The vehicle then slammed into a three-story house. The bus driver was the most severely injured and had to be extricated by emergency personnel. He was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

The nature and extent of the injuries sustained by the other victims, four bus passengers and a person inside the home, were not known. Officials said the bus was southbound on Woodhaven Boulevard when it went out of control at the intersection of 63rd Avenue. The casino uses a third party vendor, Trans Express, to operate its buses and transport customers to and from locations around the city, the Times reports. Officials are still looking into what caused the bus to go out of control. Our thoughts are with all the injured victims of this bus crash and we wish them the very best for a speedy recovery.
Ongoing Investigation
It is crucial in an accident such as this, that a thorough investigation is promptly conducted and that all causes as well as contributing factors for the incident are examined. When a tour bus accident occurs, there are a number of questions that arise. Did driver negligence contribute to the crash? Were alcohol and/or drugs a factor? Did driver fatigue or distraction play a part in causing the injury accident? Was there some type of vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction in the bus that led to the collision? Did a malfunction or equipment failure occur due to lack of proper vehicle maintenance?
Compensation for Injured Victims
Tour bus crashes often cause significant injuries because a majority of them are not equipped with safety features such as seat belts. In a collision, when passengers are thrown around inside the bus or ejected from the bus, they may suffer major injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage, internal injuries and bone fractures. In such cases, a number of parties may be potentially held liable for the damages such as the driver, the bus company, a contractor who employs the driver, etc. A bus company can also be held liable for negligent hiring and/or negligent employee retention.
In this particular case, the casino may also be held liable. Bus companies owe the utmost duty of care to their passengers, which means they can be held financially responsible for injuries, damages and losses sustained by passengers. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
