Evenflo Recalls Infant Car Seats after Government Pressure

carseat Car seat manufacturer Evenflo has ended a dispute with federal safety regulators and has finally agreed to recall 202,000 rear-facing infant car seats over concerns that a faulty buckle could make it difficult or even impossible to quickly remove a child from the seat in the event of an emergency. According to a report in the New York Times, the recalled seat is the Embrace 35, which was manufactured between December 2011 and May 2013. The faulty buckle was made by Amsafe Commercial Products and was used by Evenflo and its competitor Graco. So far, concern about these faulty buckles has resulted in almost six million child car seats being recalled by Evenflo and Graco.

Safety Agency’s Investigation
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started to investigate some Graco seats in 2012 after getting complaints from parents who said they had trouble getting children out of their restraints. In some cases, they had to use a knife or scissors to cut the strap. Parents were concerned how they would get their children out of the car seats in case of a car fire or an emergency situation. The investigation was later expanded to include Evenflo products.
Federal regulators had Graco recall 4.2 forward facing seats earlier this year, while Evenflo recalled 1.4 million seats. However, both companies argued that the rear-facing seats did not have to be recalled because they were designed differently and that the seats could be detached from the base even if the buckle is faulty. But NHTSA refused to accept that argument and continued to put pressure on the companies to issue a recall. Evenflo has said that owners of the defective seats would be given a replacement buckle.
