At least four people were injured in a Staten Island auto accident involving a school bus, a van and a car. According to a news report in The Staten Island Advance, the injury collision occurred at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Richmond Road in Dongan Hills. Fire officials said three people were taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No students were injured in this collision. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
School Bus Crash Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), school buses have annually averaged about 26,000 crashes resulting in 10 deaths. Of those who died, 25 percent were drivers and 75 percent were passengers. Frontal crashes account for about two passenger deaths per year. Each year, 450,000 public school buses travel more than 4.3 billion miles to transport 23.5 million children to and from school and school-related activities.
Causes of Collisions
In cases where a school bus accident occurs at a street intersection, a number of questions must be asked. Did one of the vehicles fail to yield the right-of-way to the others? Did one of the drivers run a red light or a stop sign at the intersection? Did poor visibility at the street intersection contribute to the collision? Did alcohol or drugs play a part? Was one of the motorists distracted or inattentive? These and other factors must be examined in order to determine what caused the incident.
Compensation for Injured Victims
Injured victims of school bus accidents can seek compensation from the at-fault parties for their losses. Potential liable parties in a school bus crash could include the school district, the bus driver, the bus company or other at-fault motorists. Injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical and hospitalization costs, lost earnings and benefits, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
